John Barrymore (1882-1942)

The only time I'm at ease is when I can bury this damned profile beneath false whiskers, putty noses, and pasteboard foreheads. I need a barrier-something to hide behind.
-John Barrymore
John was a wonderful actor. His debut was at age 18, in one of his father's plays. He was known for his moving performances of Hamlet. He was very interested in art, but was drawn to acting, as a source of income. He began around 1914 working on films in New York, then later came out to Hollywood. He stared in many films, and is known as a character actor. Sadly, he let drinking take over his life. He died in Los Angeles in 1942 of pneumonia and cirrhosis of the liver.
